A cruise ship or cruise liner is a passenger ship used for pleasure voyages, where the voyage itself and the ship’s amenities are part of the experience. Cruising has become a major part of the tourism industry, with millions of passengers each year. The industry’s rapid growth has seen nine or more newly built ships catering to a North American clientele added every year since 2001, as well as others servicing European clientele. Smaller markets such as the Asia-Pacific region are generally serviced by older tonnage displaced by new ships introduced into the high growth areas.

Cruise ships operate mostly on routes that return passengers to their originating port. In contrast, ocean liners do “line voyages” and typically transport passengers from one point to another, rather than on round trips. Some liners also engage in longer trips which may not lead back to the same port for many months.^[1]

Traditionally, an ocean liner will be built to a higher standard than a cruise ship, including stronger plating to withstand ocean voyages, most commonly crossing the North Atlantic. The only traditional ocean liners in operation, as of August 2008, are Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth II (to be retired in November 2008), both part of the Cunard fleet. The liners RMS Queen Mary and SS United States are also extant, with long-standing plans to return the latter to service, although this appears increasingly unlikely given its age and condition.

The Wii is the most compact of the next-generation consoles. It weighs just 2.7 pounds and measures 8.5 inches long by 6 inches wide by less than 2 inches thick. It has clean, sharp lines and an Apple-like glossy white finish, though we’ll undoubtedly see units in black and possibly other colors at some point.

Like the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, The Wii can be oriented horizontally or vertically, thanks to its angled plastic stand. Once you’ve positioned it, your next step is to plug in the power supply (which is about the size a laptop brick), and connect the bundled composite audio/video cables to your television. To output content at the Wii’s maximum 480p resolution in 16:9 wide-screen format, you’ll have to purchase the optional component cable separately.

Next you must set up the included controllers: a Wii Remote and a Nunchuk–a joystick-style controller that connects to the remote for additional game control. I first hooked up the supplied sensor bar to the console and placed it just under the display of my TV. The sensor bar allows the console to communicate wirelessly (via Bluetooth) with up to four Wii Remotes at a time. The Wii Remote works for games within a radius of about 30 feet and functions as a cursor-type pointing device within about 15 feet. In my testing, the on-screen pointer jittered slightly when I tried to use it from farther away.

Criminals are an ugly, cowardly lot more worthy of pity and disdain than admiration. This is what you’ll learn playing through the single-player campaign in Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV. The series cheered (and criticized) for glorifying violence has taken an unexpected turn: it’s gone legit. Oh sure, you’ll still blow up cop cars, run down innocent civilians, bang hookers, assist drug dealers and lowlifes and do many, many other bad deeds, but at a cost to main character Niko Bellic’s very soul. GTA IV gives us characters and a world with a level of depth previously unseen in gaming and elevates its story from a mere shoot-em-up to an Oscar-caliber drama. Every facet of Rockstar’s new masterpiece is worthy of applause. Without question, Grand Theft Auto IV is the best game since Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Mineral makeup strikes again! I picked up Revlon’s ColorStay Mineral Eye Shadow in Sunlit Jade, which has shimmery creme, bronze and olive colors. Revlon’s ColorStay 12 Hour shadow is very popular and long-wearing, so I was hopeful about the talc-free version. Most of the shades are so neutral, they’d work for most skin tones, but I really didn’t love the olive color this one came with. Plus, I wish they’d offered more of the cah-razy colors Buns loves to wear. Sigh…no one is flamboyant like me.

On the plus side, the texture feels great - it’s ultra smooth and silky feeling. The colors blend really well with each other, and I was able to smooth out most of the olive color without redoing my makeup (yay!) Also, the product seemed to last well like its 12-hour counterpart - they stayed true and fresh looking for a good 4 hours or so. (Don’t judge it because of that - the 12 hour thing’s a lie too.)
